Well educated by his co-author James Patterson, Andrew Gross has mastered the technique of writing riveting mysteries using short chapters as a compelling force for the reader to continue for “just one more chapter.”  He also uses change of voice allowing us to get within the mindset of different characters which is very effective in evoking emotion and tension.

When Dr. Henry Steadman, in Florida to speak at a medical convention, is stopped for a minor traffic violation, the reader as well as he, is disturbed by the over the top abusive treatment by the patrol cop.  After frightening questioning and being handcuffed he is suddenly released with just a written warning.  As he waits for the paperwork, a car speeds by and kills the cop.  Left as a prime suspect at the scene of the crime, Henry panics.  He heads to a friend’s home hoping to enlist his help, only to find him mysteriously murdered.  It becomes more and more apparent to Henry that he is being framed for these crimes.  With no idea of whom is trying to destroy his life and equally no clue as to why, terrified Henry is on a quest to find his assailant and prove his innocence.  As the stakes get even higher, the horror of the situation becomes gripping.

Tension and alarm on the part of the reader makes it impossible to put down this book.  It is a psychological thriller that examines the motivation and out of control behavior of the predator at the same time as portraying the confusion and anguish of the pursued.  This study of human behavior couched within a chilling story explores the concept of how fast a life can unravel in a matter of “15 seconds”!
