In “Tangling with Tyrants: Managing the Balance of Power at Work”, Tony Deblauwe focuses on the subject of dealing with obstinate bosses.  Tony offers a very concise and well planned out step-by-step approach on how to deal with a bad or difficult boss.  Bad bosses are a dime a dozen, they are everywhere;  the real trick is finding a good boss and when you do, hold on tight.  In chapter one the author talks about the emotions involved that come into play in the work place when dealing with a Tyrant.  There are several case studies throughout the book that can help you to see that others have the same problems that you do.  The important thing to remember is that you are not the only one who has a tyrant as a boss.

In today’s workplace employees need to change their point of view and try to understand the situation from the manager's point of view, and avoid making assumptions about their managers based on past interactions. Having an effective communication process with your boss is extremely important.  In addition, today people are being asked to do more work, with fewer resources, which puts pressure on everyone, including the managers, who then put pressure on their employees

Hopefully "Tangling with Tyrants" will help many people find ways to improve their work situations. If not, chapter eleven “Exit Strategy” also offers good advice on when and how to leave your job.  There are several reasons employees leave their jobs with the number one reason being a bad boss.  In fact,  many people will leave their dream job because of a dreadful boss.

To conclude, I would say that Tony Deblauwe’s book is great.  He starts out with “Emotions and Work” and covers everything up to and including leaving your job and finding a new one.  This is one book that anyone troublesome boss should read.  The author ties all the information neatly together, up to and including the end of the book.  I have to admit I could not put this book down.  “Tangling with Tyrants: Managing the Balance of Power at Work”, is a must have.  I enjoyed this book and I think you will be too.
