The way we went from filling out college applications to moving our oldest daughter into a dorm was the “live, screw up, and learn” method.  I do not recommend it.  What we thought would be a great experience turned out to be one of the biggest headaches in our lives. We stumbled from beginning till end, and these were not small stumbles either.  I wish we had " Sending your Child to College: The Prepared Parent’s Operational Manual" at that time.

With information broken into simple, understandable chapters you are led before the  college search even begins through moving in to residence.  Chapter 1 covers things you should be doing before you even start.  These steps will prepare and organize both the student and the parents.  Chapters 2 thru 8 cover things you should be doing through the summer months prior to the beginning of school.  Our family thought this only consisted of purchasing really cool bedding and things we thought our daughter would need; it was much, much more.  Chapters 9 thru 13 have your student moving in and walking you through the debt that can be incurred quickly and how to manage it.  Things you need to tell your child are covered in chapters 14 and 15, and you must make them listen.  The final chapters cover things just for parents; things you need to know and added support you will need when you say good-by and turn around to leave your baby in the big world all by themselves.

My family will not take this journey alone again.  We will have the experience of Marie Carr and her daughters leading us and our three remaining daughters thru the door.
